Bone is living tissue constantly being broken down and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn’t keep up with the loss of old bone, causing bones to become weak, brittle and vulnerable to breaking, particularly in the hip, spine and wrist. The condition affects men and women of all races, but white and Asian women are at the highest risk, especially if older and beyond menopause.

There are also several other risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing osteoporosis. For example:

• Hormone levels, especially low sex hormones or menopause, and overactive thyroid hormones and adrenal glands

• Body frame size – people with smaller frames and lower body weight have less bone mass to draw from as they age

• Use of some medications – particularly corticosteroids, seizure medications, cancer medications, and gastric reflux medication

• Harmful lifestyle choices – smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and sedentary habits

Symptoms

A person usually isn’t aware of the presence of osteoporosis until an injury or fall has happened causing a break. Early stages of bone loss are not visible, but signs that your bones may be weakened by osteoporosis include:

• Back pain, caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra

• Gradual loss of height

• A stooped posture

• A bone that breaks much more easily than expected

Testing and Treatment

Testing for osteoporosis typically involves a Bone-Density Test or Bone Mass Measurement, which determine and rate bone health. Keep bones strong by eating a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, exercising, and not smoking.
