Bronchitis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which are the air passages that lead to the lungs. It is most commonly caused by a viral or bacterial infection but can also be triggered by inhalation of irritants such as smoke, air pollutants, or chemical fumes. Acute bronchitis usually lasts for a few weeks, while chronic bronchitis lasts for several months and can be a symptom of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Symptoms of bronchitis include coughing, chest discomfort, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Treatment of bronchitis depends on the underlying cause of the infection and its severity. Acute bronchitis often resolves on its own, and treatment may include rest, fluids, cough suppressants, and over-the-counter pain relievers. Treatment for chronic bronchitis usually involves reducing exposure to irritants and using medications such as bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and antibiotics if necessary.

Prevention measures such as quitting smoking, avoiding irritants, and washing hands frequently can reduce the risk of contracting bronchitis. In severe cases, hospitalization may be required, particularly for those with chronic bronchitis who experience sudden worsening of symptoms. With proper management and early treatment, most people recover fully from bronchitis without complications.
