Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that results in inflammation and narrowing of the airways, making it difficult to breathe. It is estimated that approximately 1 in 13 individuals in the United States has asthma, making it a common condition. Asthma can cause a wide range of symptoms, including wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Asthma triggers may include pollen, dust, cold air, exercise, respiratory infections, strong odors, and stress. These triggers can cause a person’s airways to become constricted, leading to the typical asthma symptoms.

Asthma can be diagnosed with a physical exam, breathing tests, and medical history. Asthma treatment usually includes medications such as inhaled bronchodilators (rescue inhalers) to help dilate the airways during a flare-up, and inhaled corticosteroids (controller inhalers) to help prevent airway inflammation and improve overall asthma control. Lifestyle changes such as avoiding triggers and improving overall health and wellness can also help manage asthma symptoms.

In more severe cases, a person with asthma may need additional treatment, such as oral or intravenous medications, hospitalization, or emergency intervention. With proper management and treatment, asthma can be well-controlled, allowing individuals to lead full, active lives.
